UpToDocs ("we", "our", or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your data. This Privacy Policy explains how UpToDocs collects, uses, and safeguards information when you install or use the UpToDocs GitHub App.
Scope
This policy applies to:
- The UpToDocs GitHub App
- Associated services required to provide documentation automation
- Our public website and documentation
It does not apply to GitHub itself or third-party services governed by their own policies.
Information We Process
UpToDocs processes only the minimum data required to provide its functionality.
Repository Data
- Git diffs
- File paths
- Commit metadata
- Documentation files (Markdown / MDX)
Metadata
- Repository name and owner
- Installation identifiers
- Configuration files (e.g.
.github/uptodocs.yml)
UpToDocs does not process private user profile data beyond what GitHub provides to installed apps.
What We Do NOT Collect
- No passwords
- No personal messages
- No analytics tracking users across repositories
- No behavioral profiling
- No source code stored long-term
How Data Is Used
Data is used exclusively to:
- Detect documentation-relevant code changes
- Generate documentation updates
- Open pull requests or preview comments
- Provide explanations in pull request descriptions
Data is never used for:
- Training machine learning models
- Advertising or marketing
- Selling or sharing with third parties
AI & Automated Processing
UpToDocs may use AI services to:
- Improve documentation phrasing
- Generate summaries of code changes
- Fill predefined documentation templates
AI is not used to:
- Detect code changes
- Execute code
- Auto-merge pull requests
- Invent undocumented features
All AI-generated output is subject to human review before merge.
Data Retention
- Repository content is processed transiently and discarded after task completion
- No long-term storage of source code
- Logs contain only minimal operational metadata for debugging
Data Security
We apply reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, including:
- HTTPS for all data transmission
- Scoped GitHub App permissions
- Short-lived authentication tokens
- No direct write access to default branches
Third-Party Services
UpToDocs may rely on:
- GitHub APIs (core functionality)
- Cloud infrastructure providers (hosting & background jobs)
- AI language model providers (plan-dependent)
These services receive only the data necessary to perform their role.
Cross-Border Data Transfers
Data may be processed in regions where our infrastructure providers operate. We rely on industry-standard safeguards for secure data handling.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to:
- Request information about data usage
- Request deletion of installation-related metadata
- Disable or uninstall the app at any time
Uninstalling the app immediately stops all data processing.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the service evolves. Significant changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date.
